Mechanical Quality Inspector – Pipe Rack Modules (Data Centre Project)

1 open position

Mechanical Quality Inspector – Pipe Rack Modules (Data Centre Project)

Duration: 6 months - Immediate start.

Location: Onsite Belgium

 Role Overview:

Responsible for on-site quality inspection, verification, and oversight of prefabricated mechanical pipe rack modules from delivery through installation on a data centre project. The role ensures compliance with design, specifications, codes, and client standards, driving punch‑free installation and full traceability into commissioning and handover.

 Location and Travel:

  • Pipe rack modules are assembled in Germany, with welding completed in a separate facility.
  • Final installation is on a data centre construction site in Belgium.
  • The role is site‑based in Belgium for the full installation phase, including pre‑install inspections, installation monitoring, and punch‑list close‑out.
  • Periodic travel to fabrication and welding facilities in Germany may be required for:
    • Pre‑production and in‑process audits and inspections.
    • Factory walk‑downs.
    • Resolution of quality issues that could impact site installation.

Note: The facility is managed by company that the Mechanical Quality Inspector will be working with, and they will be part of one quality team.

 Responsibilities

Quality inspection and oversight

  • Inspect delivered pipe rack modules for transport damage, correct tagging, orientation, and dimensional compliance before acceptance on the Belgian site.
  • Verify materials, welds, supports, insulation and accessories against isometrics, GA drawings, and module fabrication drawings.
  • Check module interfaces (flanges, supports, anchors, connection points) for correct location, orientation, and accessibility for commissioning and maintenance.
  • Witness and verify mechanical installation of modules onto steelwork or concrete (alignment, level, anchor fixing, grout, tolerances).
  • Confirm correct installation of thermal insulation, vapour barriers, trace heating, and labelling on installed modules.

Compliance with codes, specs and ITPs

  • Execute inspection and test activities in line with approved ITPs, method statements, and project specifications.
  • Verify compliance with applicable mechanical codes/standards as defined in the project documentation.
  • Raise and follow up non‑conformance reports (NCRs) for any deviations; agree corrective actions with construction and supervision teams and verify closure.

 Documentation, traceability and records

  • Ensure inspection records, checklists, punch lists and red‑line mark‑ups are completed accurately and promptly for each module and install location.
  • Ensure all client documentation is correctly completed and uploaded onto the agreed software systems.
  • Support compilation and review of mechanical quality dossiers / turnover packs for the pipe rack systems.

Interface with fabrication, construction, design and commissioning

  • Liaise with fabrication facilities to understand fabrication sequence, welding procedures, NDT scope and any open quality issues before modules ship.
  • Work closely with construction supervisors, planners and lifting/rigging teams in Belgium to sequence inspections without delaying critical path installation.
  • Interface with design/engineering to resolve site queries (clashes, access, tolerance issues) and support constructability and “right‑first‑time” solutions.
  • Support commissioning teams by ensuring test points, drains, vents, isolation valves and instrumentation are installed as per design and are accessible and identifiable.

 Field leadership and continuous improvement

  • Provide practical feedback and toolbox‑style coaching to foremen and fitters on recurring quality issues, typical defects, and preferred installation practices.
  • Participate in quality walks and punch‑list inspections, driving early identification and close‑out of defects on pipe rack modules and connected systems.
  • Feed lessons learned back to fabrication and design teams to improve future module design and constructability for data centre roll‑outs.

 Experience and Qualifications

  • Trade or engineering background in mechanical piping (pipefitter/fabricator, mechanical technician, or mechanical engineer) with substantial site experience.
  • Experience in mechanical QA/QC or supervision on large industrial or mission‑critical projects; data centre, pharma, semiconductor or power experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience with prefabricated / modular pipe racks and piping systems including supports and integration with steelwork.
  • Familiarity with relevant piping and mechanical standards and typical project specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret GA drawings, isometrics, support details, module drawings, and vendor documents.
  • Experience working within a formal QA/QC framework (ITPs, checklists, NCRs, punch‑list, turnover documentation) and with digital quality/commissioning tools.
  • Good understanding of data centre environment requirements: critical cooling and process services, segregation of critical/non‑critical systems, access for maintenance and commissioning.
  • Strong communication skills in an international project environment, able to interface with construction teams, engineers, client representatives and commissioning teams.
